Outside of Tokyo, Japan is home to a number of traditional business hubs like Nagoya and Osaka, and even a newer centre like Fukuoka has seen its star rise. Law firms in these cities pride themselves on not only knowing their region extremely well but also sniffing out new opportunities that come along.

QUESTION:

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES TO OPERATE OUTSIDE THE TOKYO METROPOLITAN AREA? WHAT KIND OF OPPORTUNITIES DO YOU SEE IN YOUR REGION?

The Aichi Prefecture, where Toyota has its headquarters, has been a global hub of the automobile sector, which is supported by layers of various parts and materials producers. So, Aichi is also home to many industrial equipment and chemical manufacturers and has a large service sector that supports these manufacturers.

As we are based in Nagoya, the capital of Aichi, we have a wide range of clients of all sizes in these sectors. With such a wide client base, we not only serve them but also have built our experiences, thus fully understanding their way of work such as “genchi genbutsu (go and see for yourself).” This enables us to provide legal advice fitting their needs. This characteristic is one of the major differences from legal business in Tokyo, where a good portion of legal business concerns financial matters.

As for the fields where we aim to focus in the future, first, we should deepen our understanding of old and new legal issues in these industries (e.g., contract, labour, debt collection, intellectual property laws and regulations, and bankruptcy and rehabilitation). Second, we need to bolster our advising capability on practice areas such as international issues to companies that are expanding abroad and conducting M&A, about which there are fewer experts here in Nagoya (compared with the Greater Tokyo area).

Also, we are looking into information technology (IT) and startup support. We expect a big change in the structure of the automobile industry as it embraces new technologies in response to climate change and build robust supply chains (for ESG and data security etc.). Therefore, demand for legal support for IT and startups will rise going forward.

Since our founding in Osaka in 1968, we have expanded and set up offices first in Tokyo (in 2003) and then Kyoto (in 2009).

While the Greater Tokyo area is one of the largest metropolitan areas in the World, the Greater Osaka area is one of the highly visible metropolitan areas in Asia. Admittedly, in recent years, many listed companies originating from Greater Osaka have moved their head offices to Tokyo. Nonetheless, a considerable number of influential companies continue to call Osaka and Kyoto their base of operation (such as Nintendo and Panasonic).

On the other hand, compared to Tokyo, there are considerably fewer law firms with 60 or more attorneys in Greater Osaka that offer corporate services and handle cross-border transactions. This places us in a good position to fill in the gap. In fact, over the years, we have been a go-to law firm for many clients in Japan and overseas, from big companies listed on the Prime Market of the Tokyo Stock Exchange to medium- and small-sized businesses across industries.

Going forward, we are committed to honing our expertise in each of our practice areas by delivering legal services of impeccable quality and technical excellence while meeting client demands responsively and efficiently, especially when it comes to finance and banking law. Indeed, delivering excellence in financial and banking practice has been the hallmark of our firm ever since its founding. Further down the line, our goal is to do our part to make sure that the recent strategy initiated by the Osaka prefectural government to reshape Osaka into “the Global Financial City of OSAKA.” It is our sincere hope that by answering the likely rise in demand for legal services within the financial community as a result of that strategy we can contribute to further growth in the finance industry and economic development of the Greater Osaka area.

Kyushu is close to Asia. For example, you can see it by the fact that South Korea is closer to Kyushu than Tokyo. Due to the geographical advantage, it has a deep economic connection with Asia. Going forward, Kyushu will be home to companies that are not confined to steadily shrinking domestic markets but expand to Asian countries. Also, more companies here are expected to capture further inbound tourism demand (from Asian countries). These corporations will grow in the coming years, and we are committed to supporting the growth of these businesses.

Of the around 42,000 lawyers in Japan, roughly half work in Tokyo, and only about 2,700 are in Kyushu. Subsequently, it is relatively easy to find lawyers experienced in specific fields in Tokyo, while Kyushu has less access to expert business lawyers. We work on a wide variety of corporate legal affairs, and for each field we handle, we have a practice team comprised of competent lawyers. We also educate young lawyers in each team. By doing so, our specialized lawyers can provide legal services to companies in Kyushu, thereby narrowing the regional disparity between Tokyo and Kyushu.
