PAUL S. RHEE
senior foreign attorney & partner, Yoon & Yang

news

Paul S. Rhee is a seasoned legal professional with over 20 years of experience in competition and antitrust, as well as M&A.

He has worked with several large corporations such as RTX, Microsoft, Camso, Oriental Brewery, and Contemporary Amperex Technology during his entire career at Yoon & Yang.

He has handled several high-profile cases, including representing Camso’s now former Korean subsidiary in a private damage claim filed in Seoul Central District Court by five state-owned Korean power companies arising from a 2017 cartel investigation by the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC). He also advised United Technologies during KFTC’s merger review of its acquisitions of Goodrich, Rockwell Collins and Raytheon. He also acted for Microsoft in the KFTC’s merger review of its acquisition of Nokia’s mobile device business, which was settled through the first consent decree in Korea for merger review. Additionally, he provided legal counsel to key European automobile industry stakeholders, such as Michelin, PCA Automobiles/Stellantis, Schaeffler, and Faurecia/Forvia, in various merger filings in Korea related to R&D and business development of hydrogen fuel cells. Throughout his career, Rhee has established himself as a highly regarded lawyer in the field of competition and antitrust by prestigious legal publications. Since 2019, he has consistently achieved a notable ranking for his expertise in this area. In addition, he has received esteemed awards for his exceptional work, including the Client Choice Award in Competition & Antitrust for South Korea in multiple years.

SEOKCHUN YUN
partner, Peter & Kim

news

Seokchun Yun is a partner at Peter & Kim who specialises in international arbitration, cross-border litigation and international trade. He has worked with clients such as the South Korean government’s Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Mirae Asset Global Investments, Westinghouse Electric and Hotel Lotte DFS.

One of Yun’s most significant achievements in the past year was representing the Republic of Korea in London court proceedings to challenge an arbitration award. The award was rendered in an international investment dispute initiated by Elliott Associates, a global activist fund, against the Korean government. The dispute arose from the merger of Samsung affiliates and its approval through the Korean National Pension Fund.

Yun worked on a notable case where investment vehicles owned by a global private equity fund, Lone Star, initiated an ICSID arbitration against the Korean government. The case centred around the approval of the sale of a major Korean bank then owned by Lone Star and the imposition of taxes on the return on and profits from Lone Star’s investment. It was the first investment arbitration filed against the Korean government and extremely complex in terms of both the legal issues involved and the period covered. Yun advised the Republic of Korea in this dispute.

As a dispute lawyer, Yun believes that the ultimate goal of client service is obtaining and securing the best result for the client. He says that to achieve this, counsel should closely communicate with and listen to the true needs of the client.
