Despite the pandemic, Singapore has seen an increase in the number of law practices, according to a report in the Straits Times. The city-state had 1016 law firms as of Sept. 27, up from 998 on Dec. 31 last year.

The Straits Times report added that about 80 percent of Singapore law practices are small law firms with one to five lawyers each, while there are 174 mid-sized firms with six to 30 lawyers. The number of big firms with more than 30 lawyers is 23.

Recent international entrants into Singapore include Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas and Khaitan & Co from India; Bae, Kim & Lee from Korea; Allbright Law Offices from China; and U.S. firms Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, and  McDermott Will & Emery.

According to the 2021 annual report of the Law Society of Singapore, there were 6,333 practitioners as of Aug. 31, crossing the 6,000 mark for the first time.
