Nishimura & Asahi, Japan’s largest law firm, has hired energy and natural resources specialist Alexander Woody as a partner in Tokyo from White & Case, where he spent 22 years.

The 4th annual ALB India Law Awards were held Friday, June 10, at the Taj Land’s End Mumbai, showcasing the finest achievements of the country’s legal industry in the past year. It was only the second in-person ALB India Law Awards, after the pandemic pushed the 2020 and 2021 editions online. 

 

The 18th annual ALB Japan Law Awards were held Thursday, June 2, at Ritz-Carlton Tokyo, showcasing the finest achievements of the Japanese legal industry in the past year. It was the first in-person event since 2019, after the pandemic pushed the 2020 and 2021 events online.  

After a two-year pandemic-induced hiatus made virtual events the default option, the ALB Awards series returned to in-person mode with a bang on Wednesday, May 25, with Singapore’s Grand Hyatt playing host to the 18th annual ALB SE Asia Law Awards.

In its annual list, ALB highlights some of Asia’s distinguished lawyers working with offshore law firms. These legal professionals have outperformed their peers and earned wide recognition from their clients with high-quality advice and support. The lawyers on the list were selected based on client recommendations sent directly to ALB. Some lawyers have been profiled.

As Japanese companies continue to shift their business models from export-oriented domestic production to FDI-driven overseas production, Japan has become one of the world’s largest sources of outbound investment. Lawyers assisting Japanese companies in their forays into Asia and the Middle East talk about both the opportunities and risks in these regions. 

The Indian legal sector is undergoing a transformational phase, with an increasing number of smaller law firms now offering quality legal services. Boasting a personalized approach and innovative strategies, these firms are going toe-to-toe with much larger rivals, and winning clients in the process.
