This marks the third consecutive year that ALB has focused on the five provinces and one city in East China—Shandong, Jiangsu, Anhui, Zhejiang, Jiangxi, and Shanghai—highlighting outstanding legal services provided by individuals and groups, as well as their impressive achievements over the past year. Over the past three years, ALB has continuously refined and expanded its product suite, including publications, rankings, awards, forums, and new media, to support the development of the legal market in East China. These efforts have paid off significantly: this year, the ALB East China Awards received over 920 nominations, a 21% increase from last year, with a 39% increase in participating institutions. Notably, rapidly growing regional law firms from Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Anhui have enthusiastically participated, demonstrating the vitality of legal services in these areas and affirming ALB’s profound influence in the region. This year’s awards feature 30 categories, including two new ones: the “ESG and Sustainability Law Firm of the Year” and the “Employment Law Firm of the Year,” focusing on the ESG issues triggered by energy and industrial transformations in East China, as well as emerging service needs and models in the labor and employment sector. Additionally, individual award submissions have increased by 30%, as we assess leaders in the East China legal market from both business and management perspectives; in-house department award submissions have grown by 38%, as we examine the evolving critical roles of in-house departments from risk control and innovation viewpoints. As a pivotal region for China’s economic development and a high ground for opening up, East China plays an essential role in shaping the country’s future development paths, with legal professionals playing a crucial part in this process. We observed: first, with the rise of the new energy and electric vehicle industries, transaction activity has been exceptionally high, playing a central role in China’s economy and prominently featured in various award categories; second, post-pandemic consumer enthusiasm has rebounded, with frequent transactions, particularly in new consumer sectors; third, accompanying China’s comprehensive implementation of the “innovation-driven development” strategy, the technology innovation sector has rapidly developed, especially with strong support from the capital markets; finally, with the resumption of international exchanges post-pandemic, East China, as a window for China’s international interactions, has seen numerous cross-border elements in related transactions. Looking ahead, the East China region will continue to play a vital role in China’s legal market. It is not only a crucial engine for China’s economy but also a frontier for legal innovation and practice.
