Yao identifies distinct characteristics in the current wave of Chinese overseas expansion compared to previous “going global” and “Belt and Road Initiative” phases. “First, we’re seeing greater industry diversity. The overseas expansion is no longer dominated by natural resources, infrastructure, and heavy industry. Second, company profiles have diversified. While industry leaders previously led international expansion, we now see many small and medium-sized enterprises venturing abroad, either independently or as part of supply chain networks. This requires lawyers to serve a broader client base.” “Despite current global economic uncertainty, I believe the momentum of globalization continues,” Yao adds. “We’ll increasingly help clients operating across multiple jurisdictions navigate complex investment environments and regulations. They will also embrace technological innovations, including artificial intelligence, to adapt to industry transformations.
