Global law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer had hired Tony Chow from King & Wood Mallesons to lead the firm’s contentious insolvency practice in Hong Kong.

As a director of restructuring and insolvency at KWM, Chow has over a decade of experience advising clients on high-profile financial distress situations and bet-the-company disputes.

He advised on China Evergrande Group’s mega-restructuring of offshore liabilities exceeding $23 billion and winding up proceedings in Hong Kong. He also advised HNA Aviation as the white knight investor in its strategic investment in Hong Kong Airlines as part of a successful $6.2 billion debt restructuring of Hong Kong Airlines.

Chow’s other clients have included Jiangsu Zhongnan Construction Group, Credit Suisse, China Life, PwC, Deloitte, and Sinovac Biotech. He joined KWM as a counsel in 2022 from Latham & Watkins.

“This senior-level addition to our team comes at a time of increased client demand for advice on restructuring and insolvency matters. I am confident that Tony’s experience will further strengthen our regional R&I and disputes offering and meet our clients’ needs,” said Dan Anderson, partner and head of Freshfields’ Asia restructuring and capital solutions practice.

Freshfields now has 19 partners in Hong Kong.
