ALLISTER TAN, 38
director, Drew & Napier

news

Allister Tan is a director in Drew & Napier’s dispute resolution department. His practice areas span insurance, as well as corporate and commercial disputes.

In his 14 years of practice, some of his legal work has drawn the attention of the press.

One recent instance was when he successfully acted for the owners of a luxury hotel in Phuket in a claim against its insurers for business interruption losses suffered as a result of the mandated closure of the hotel due to closure orders issued by the Thai authorities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This is an important and significant case as it is one of the first few cases in Singapore where the courts have had the opportunity to consider insurance coverage issues arising from COVID-19-related business interruption claims, which has become an important issue in many countries in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tan has acted for insures, reinsurers, brokers and policyholders in a wide range of insurance-related disputes across all insurance lines, and his experience in such matters and stellar work have enabled him to help build and grow the insurance disputes practice of the firm.

Many of his cases involve big corporations and claims in the millions. But he counts among his proudest achievements, cases with humanitarian value. This includes securing a significant reduction of a custodial sentence for a widow and single mother of three who had been charged with 15 counts of forgery when he acted as a CLAS-appointed advocate.

He also serves as the honorary secretary of Dementia Singapore.

Anthony Koh, a client and CEO of ISOTeam, describes him as possessing “a brilliant legal mind” and to be “an extremely persuasive advocate”.

Another client, Chin Hwee Siang, Head of Trade Credit Claims and Recovery of Incomlend, describes him as “not only an excellent legal advisor but also a savvy negotiator with a good understanding of both our commercial as well as insurance requirements.”

“I was hugely impressed by the quality of your work and the diligence with which you performed it. In over 40 years of practice, I have rarely observed an associate with such talent and commitment” says Jonathan Wood, Chair of The Board of Trustees of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

Today, he is widely recognised within the funds industry to be a leading expert on the VCC. One of the notable VCCs that Tee assisted with establishing and which received press coverage was the SBI Sygnum Azimut – Digital Asset Opportunity Fund VCC, which was a joint venture between SBI Ventures, Sygnum and Azimut.

At the ALB SEA Awards 2021, Tee was nominated as a finalist for the category of SEA Young Lawyer of the Year.
