Offshore law firm Appleby has added litigation and insolvency expert John McCarroll SC as a partner in Hong Kong, from the BVI office of rival Harneys. The hire is subject to regulatory approvals.

He becomes the second lateral partner hire made by Appleby’s Hong Kong office in a matter of days, after it added Lily Miao from Mourant Ozannes.

McCarroll, who has been a silk since 2013, has over 30 years of experience in commercial disputes, including company law, trusts, regulatory, insolvency, receivership, and financial services. He joined Harneys in 2018, and became a partner in 2021.

“John’s extensive BVI experience and his position as a leading silk complements our existing offering and matches the demands of our ever-increasing client base, who turn to Appleby for their high-value complex offshore disputes,” said David Bulley, managing partner of Appleby’s Hong Kong and Shanghai offices, in a statement.

Appleby now has 28 lawyers in Hong Kong, including 12 partners.
