Etisalat’s former group general counsel, Isam Akrat, has resigned from the company for personal reasons, a representative from the telecom giant confirmed to The Brief.

Akrat had first joined the Abu Dhabi-based Etisalat – once a monopoly within the United Arab Emirates – in 1997. He left the company to join Thuraya Satellite Telecommunications, and then moved to a Kuwait-based development fund before returning to Etisalat as general counsel in 2005. He returned to Etisalat during a crucial period when the telecom sector in the country was liberalising.

In an interview with The Brief in April, Akrat said he had witnessed the evolution of Etisalat and the wider telecom sector in the UAE over the last 15 years. During his time with the company, Etisalat grew to have operations in 18 different countries across the Middle East, Asia, and Africa.

Akrat left the telecom giant at the end of May this year. Etisalat is currently recruiting for a new general counsel, the representative said.
