U.S. law firm Loeb & Loeb has welcomed James Zimmerman and Scott Palmer as partners in its Beijing office. They will be joined by a team of 15 lawyers, paralegals, and intellectual property specialists from Perkins Coie’s Beijing office, which recently announced its closure this week.

Loeb also confirmed that pending regulatory approval, the former Perkins Coie Beijing IP Agency will become part of its operations, with Scott Palmer continuing to lead the agency.

Zimmerman has nearly 30 years of experience working in China, advising foreign companies on corporate matters, transactions, compliance, litigation, and white-collar crime defence, with a focus on the media, music, and film and television industries. He has also been involved in consulting foreign media on China-related issues such as security, press freedom, and daily operations. Zimmerman has served four terms as chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in China.

Palmer specialises in providing intellectual property services across various industries, including brand development, advertising and product quality, patent licensing and litigation, as well as anti-counterfeiting and anti-piracy litigation and enforcement. He leads a renowned brand protection team in Asia and serves as co-chair of the Legal Affairs Committee at the American Chamber of Commerce in China.

This marks the second time Zimmerman and Palmer have transitioned law firms together. In May 2018, they moved from U.S. law firm Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton to Perkins Coie, after which Sheppard closed its Beijing office the following year.

“Loeb is a top firm in the intellectual property and brand protection space and has a stellar reputation in the industry,” said Palmer. “I look forward to joining this esteemed group of lawyers and to continue helping global clients navigate the intellectual property protection landscape in China.”

Zimmerman added, " The firm has significant cross-border experience in Asia, which will allow us to strengthen and grow our work helping foreign companies do business in the region."

Lawrence Venick, managing partner of Loeb & Loeb’s Hong Kong and Beijing offices, stated, " We share a commitment to the region, which is what differentiates Loeb from the pack."

Previously, Loeb’s Beijing office had five legal professionals, including three partners.
