Simon Powell, a former Hong Kong managing partner of Latham & Watkins, has joined the investment advisor panel of UK-headquartered third-party funder Woodsford Litigation Funding.

Powell, who spent nine years at Latham in Hong Kong, left the firm in January to start his own arbitration practice. At Latham, he established the firm’s Asia litigation practice in 2010 after joining from Jones Day.

Woodsford Litigation Funding has offices in London, Philadelphia and Singapore. The latter office opened in October 2017.

The past two years have seen third-party funding take major strides in Asia. In 2017, Singapore had announced that it would clear the way for third-party funding in arbitration, bolstering its aim to become one of the world’s most attractive arbitration centres.

Following suit is Hong Kong, which in December, after a period of uncertainty, finally issued guidelines around third-party funding of arbitration and announced that laws granting this are going to be implemented after Feb. 1.
