Up-and-coming Southeast Asian legal and tax advisory firm VDB Loi has hired former Rajah & Tann partner Chris Muessel to lead its legal practice in the region.

VDB Loi, which was launched earlier this year by ex-DFDL partners Edwin Vanderbruggen and Jean Loi, currently has offices in Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore, and Laos. The firm  plans for more growth in the region, including work with an affiliated firm in Myanmar.

Muessel, who has been a lawyer for about 20 years, is an expert in cross border M&As (including PE funds), real estate, project finance (energy and mining), compliance (including FCPA), and trade (treaties and anti-dumping claims). He has extensive experience in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand.

“Chris Muessel is one of the region’s most experienced and respected foreign lawyers,” said Loi in a statement. “We are thrilled that he has chosen to join our growing firm, and I can say with absolute certainty that our clients will benefit from his expertise.”

Prior to joining Rajah & Tann, Muessel headed Duane Morris’ Ho Chi Minh City office, and was a partner with Watson, Farley & Williams. He will be based in the VDB Loi’s Phnom Penh office. ALB
