    Methodology

    Parameters

    The parameters for the Awards are:

    • Law firm, in-house departments, banks and accountancy firms must be based in or have physical offices in Mainland China. The only exceptions are for the International Arbitration, Offshore and Hong Kong Law Firm categories.  
    • All deals must have a significant China element to qualify. 
    • Work completed and services provided within the period of 1 January 2013 through 31 December 2013.

    Deals Awards Categories

    Leading law firms are invited by e-mail to nominate and detail the most outstanding deals they have been involved in between 1 January 2013 through 31 December 2013.

    All nominations are made using the nomination form provided. The ALB team passes the nomination data to the external panel of judges, who examine the information and vote. The judges’ votes are aggregated to calculate the winning deals in each category.

    • Size - the minimum financial value of the deal required for individual deal category
            o Debt Market Deal of the Year: US$1billion or above 
            o Equity Market Deal of the Year: US$700million or above
            o Energy & Resources Deal of the Year: US$1billion or above
            o M&A Deal of the Year: US$1billion or above
            o Project Finance Deal of the Year: US$1billion or above
            o TMT Deal of the Year: US$700million or above
    • Complexity - the degree to which advanced legal and financial techniques and structures have been applied to the deal 
    • Innovation - the degree to which the deal involved groundbreaking, original legal techniques and structures
    • Breadth - the degree to which the deal spanned jurisdictions, practice areas, parties and industries

    Dealmaker of the Year – This Award will be split into China and International divisions. The lawyers nominated must be based in Mainland China. We will only accept one nomination from each firm.

    In-house Awards Categories

Once all the submission data is received, full details are passed to the external panel of judges, who examine the information provided.     • Top three significant deal involvements

    Firm Awards Categories

    In-house legal departments and other relevant individuals in leading companies, banks and accountancy firms are invited to nominate the law firms that have produced the most outstanding legal work in each practice area between 1 January 2013 through 31 December 2013. Law firms are also invited to nominate their peers and encouraged to make self-nominations for these categories.

    All nominations are made using the nomination form provided and a follow up request to finalists for detailed submissions is made. Once all the submissions are received, the panel of judges is sent the full details and they cast their votes. The judges’ votes are aggregated to calculate the winning law firms in each category.

    Law firms are judged on the following parameters

    • Team size
    • Key hires/departures
    • Key work highlights and third party recognition, in the relevant practice area

    Corporate Citizen/CSR Law Firm of the Year - This award is dedicated to those who are committed to developing the capacity of a firm to support and realise the value of diversity and inclusion (relative to developing and respecting human potential, creating a supportive and nurturing climate, and acknowledging legal responsibilities to historical inequalities), as well as giving back to the greater community. Law firms are encouraged to list significant accomplishments and innovations in “corporate citizenship” from 1 January 2013 through 31 December 2013. This includes achieving and sustaining diversity and inclusion within the firm’s personnel, policies, programmes etc., as well as engaging in pro bono legal work, charity/volunteer efforts, and environmental sustainability initiatives.

    Banking Law Firm of the Year - Applicable only to domestic law firms with at least five completed cross-border transactions from 1 January 2013 through 31 December 2013, with a minimum deal size of US$250 million.

    M&A/Private Equity Law Firm of the Year - Applicable only to domestic law firms with at least seven completed transactions from 1 January 2013 through 31 December 2013, with a minimum deal size of US$400 million.

    International Arbitration Law Firm of the Year - Applicable both to international and domestic law firms

    Real Estate Law Firm of the Year - Applicable only to domestic law firms with at least five completed transactions from 1 January 2013 through 31 December 2013, with a minimum deal size of US$200 million.

    Rising Law Firm of the Year - Applicable only to domestic law firms that have been established for less than ten years

    Shipping Law Firm of the Year - Applicable both to international and domestic law firms

    Shanghai Law Firm of the Year - Applicable only to domestic law firms that are either headquartered in Shanghai or whose original office was based in Shanghai

    Beijing Law Firm of the Year - Applicable only to domestic law firms that are either headquartered in Beijing or whose original office was based in Beijing

    Managing Partner of the Year - Applicable only to managing partners from domestic law firms, who are based in Mainland China; we will only accept one nomination from each firm.

    International Law Firm of the Year - Applicable only to international law firms with physical offices in Mainland China, and at least 15 completed cross-border transactions (from across all practice areas) from 1 January 2013 through 31 December 2013, with a minimum deal size of US$300 million.

    China Law Firm of the Year - Applicable only to domestic law firms with at least 15 completed cross-border transactions (from across all practice areas) from 1 January 2013 through 31 December 2013, with a minimum deal size of US$300 million.
