Asian Legal Business is pleased to announce that The Macallan will once again be the official event partner for the 17th annual The Macallan ALB Hong Kong Law Awards, the 15th consecutive year of this collaboration.

“The Macallan’s partnership with the event spans 15 years and that comes down to two reasons: First, we enjoy working with the great team at ALB who have been very supportive of our brand,” said David Pattinson, managing director of Edrington Hong Kong.

The Glasgow-based Edrington produces single malts The Macallan, Highland Park and The Glenrothes, blends including The Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark, and other spirits like Brugal rum and Snow Leopard vodka.

“The other reason is that the members of the law profession that attend the awards fit into the consumer profile for The Macallan, namely professionals with good taste. It has always been very well received when served at the event,” he added.

The Macallan has been popular worldwide as well. Pattinson says sales for the single malt Scotch whisky exceeded over a million cases last year, with countries across Asia being great growth markets. Though that is great news, there have also been other highlights in recent times.

“We’ve opened a new 140-million-pound [$180 million] distillery in Scotland designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners two months ago. It’s already seen as the best scotch whisky distillery experience,” said Pattinson.

In the same way that making quality whisky requires commitment, Pattinson salutes the commitment of law professionals to their work.

“Congratulations are in order for the lawyers nominated at this year’s The Macallan ALB Hong Kong Law Awards. We wish them all the best. I’m sure the judges have followed a strict process, just like The Macallan’s quality control processes.”

The Macallan ALB Hong Kong Law Awards 2018 will be held on Friday, Sept. 7 at the Conrad Hotel in Hong Kong to celebrate the achievements of the city’s leading law firms and their lawyers, as well as in-house counsel, with more than 400 expected to attend.

Deacons is the frontrunner with a total of 15 nominations, including in the Dealmaker of the Year and the Deal Firm of the Year categories. It is followed closely by Herbert Smith Freehills (14 nominations), Baker McKenzie (13) and Mayer Brown (12).

On the in-house side, this year has attracted a number of new participants, including the legal teams of Hysan Development Co., Hang Lung Group, Gammon Construction, Fosun, FinEX Asia, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Credit Suisse, AXA Insurance and Nord Anglia Education. Additionally, there are a record-breaking 14 finalists this year for the Innovative In-House Team of the Year award.

This year’s event has the highest number of categories yet -- 45 -- including new categories such as Insurance In-House Team of the Year and Transportation and Logistics In-House Team of the Year.
