Assegaf Hamzah & Partners (AHP) and Hadiputranto, Hadinoto & Partners (HHP) were the biggest winners at the inaugural ALB Indonesia Law Awards. AHP won a total of five awards, including Managing Partner of the Year, which went to Ahmad Fikri Assegaf, while HHP won seven, including the coveted Indonesia Law Firm of the Year award.

The event, held on Oct. 28 at the InterContinental Jakarta Midplaza, recognised Indonesia’s best law firms, legal work and lawyers across a total of 23 categories. Around 130 high-profile legal luminaries attended, including guests of honour Arsul Sani, a member of parliament, and Otto Hasibuan, president of the Indonesian Advocates Association (PERADI).

“With Indonesia still basking in the euphoric glow of Jokowi’s win, investor sentiment should rise and benefit the country’s business and legal sectors,” said Ranajit Dam, Managing Editor of Thomson Reuters’ Legal Media Group, “The inaugural ALB Indonesia Law Awards reaffirms this momentum and provides its dealmakers with an evening of networking and celebration.”

The event also acknowledged the success of specialised law firms and unique practice areas. Rouse and its association partner, Suryo Suryomurcio & Co, won the Intellectual Property Law Firm award, while Makes & Partners took home the Boutique Law Firm trophy.

In an attempt to identify the increasing importance of raising capital in accordance with sharia principles, the event dedicated a separate law firm category to Islamic Finance, which was won by Hanafiah Ponggawa & Partners.

In addition to recognising the accomplishments of law firms and their leading partners, the event also celebrated the key role played by leading in-house teams and individuals in the region. Rista Manurung and her team at Sun Life Indonesia had a particularly successful night, receiving the In-House Lawyer, the Banking and Financial Services In-House Team and the Hanafiah Ponggawa & Partners In-House Team of the Year awards.

“The Sun Life Financial legal team felt really inspired because of the inaugural Indonesia Law Awards,” Manurung said. “We hope to continue to achieve and accomplish. Thank you to ALB, Thomson Reuters and all award sponsors and supporting organisations for organising the prestigious 2014 Indonesia Law Awards."
