Startup name: LawFarm

Year of founding: 2013

Headquarters: Singapore and India

Founders: John Fearon, Jieyang Huang and Sreerupa Chowdhury

What it does: LawFarm offers free legal advice, provides a directory of lawyers for users to choose from, and connects people to the right lawyers for their legal cases. It allows users to write reviews on their current lawyers as well as gives regular legal updates and access to simplified legal information knowledge.

The startup aims to create the most trusted, reliable and efficient space for all things legal in India. LawFarm also provides an entire suite of legal service to the public, from Q&A services to post-a-case features, and automated will-generation service, which was launched recently.

Markets served: India

Capital raised till date: Undisclosed

Key client: Janaagraha, a not-for-profit organisation in India

How the idea came about: Since the legal industry is ripe for disruption, LawFarm’s founders thought there was a need to bridge the gap between lawyers and the public, as most laypeople have little idea about what legal matters entail and how sometimes, a simple legal solution can improve their lives exponentially.

In February 2016, LawFarm merged with Lawr, a product of Sugar Ventures Singapore, co-founded by John Fearon and Jieyang Huang.

The journey so far: According to LawFarm’s founders, their experience so far has been gruelling yet meaningful. “In all honesty, it has been a lot of hard work and dedication in continually tweaking our platform and improving our services. But the team and I do all of these with a passion and belief that many people in India are benefiting from our efforts. It is really heartening every time we hear from our users how helpful we have been and how much we have changed their lives. It becomes something we feed off on, and inspires us to do better and grow more so as to reach out to more people than we already do,” the startup explained.

Future plans: LawFarm looks forward to make inroads into the legal-tech sector in India and beyond. “There is much, much more to do, and we have to work even harder to further extend our services to our Indian users. At the moment, we are just keeping our heads down, working harder and trying to improve as much as we can so that we can continue our trajectory of growth in the Indian market. After that has been accomplished, we can then start looking further afield to the rest of the region,” one of the founders said.
