Baker & McKenzie has opened an office in Yangon, Myanmar. This is the firm's 16th in the Asia-Pacific region, and the sixth office opening in the past two years.

The Yangon office will be led by infrastructure and corporate lawyer Chris Hughes, who will be relocating from Sydney. It will focus on energy, mining and infrastructure; information technology and telecommunications; consumer goods, corporate transactions and IP.

“Clients are increasingly looking to Myanmar and Southeast Asia for growth opportunities, particularly as the ASEAN nations work collaboratively towards achieving the ASEAN Economic Community by 2015," said Eduardo Leite, chairman of Baker & McKenzie’s Executive Committee, in a statement. “We are delighted to extend our service to clients with an on-the-ground presence in Myanmar, and look forward to helping clients grow their businesses in Myanmar's increasingly globally integrated economy."

For the past two years, Baker & McKenzie had been advising clients investing in Myanmar from its Bangkok office.
