Clayton Utz and Mallesons Stephen Jaques have announced a string of partner promotions beginning 1 January 2011. The firms will promote seven and 12 staff respectively to the partnership in stark contrast to the end of 2009, when no partner appointments were made.

Mallesons has already appointed three partners in the past six months, taking the firm’s total to 15. “There was a very clear business case and needs case for these appointments,” said managing partner, Stuart Fuller. “The appointments have been market driven, in areas where the firm sees the market is growing. We also believe that in some of those areas we can improve our market share with the right people in the right place.”

He said the firm was looking at the market more aggressively. “Clients are much more discerning now. They know with which firm, in which market and with which talent they want to work,” he added.

Despite the dozen new partner appointments, Fuller said the firm was still looking at the right talent for particular areas where they see opportunities and hinted that another announcement in China was on the cards in the near future.
