Corrs Chambers Westgarth tax partner Reynah Tang is to be the next president of the Law Institute of Victoria.

Tang was endorsed at the LIV’s annual general meeting last night and will take up his position on 1 January 2013. He is the current chair of the LIV Audit Committee and represents the LIV on the Council of Legal Education. He was first elected to the council in 2007 and recently represented the LIV on Premier Ted Baillieu’s trade mission to China.

Tang said that there are challenging times ahead for the legal profession given current economic conditions, but that if lawyers can embrace change and encourage greater diversity, they would be well placed to meet these challenges. His platform for the coming year focuses on three main areas: assisting practices to adapt to new technology and working practices; implementing the first stage of the national profession reforms and engaging on issues of globalisation and cultural diversity.

Returning councillors are president elect Geoff Bowyer; past president Caroline Counsel; Tom May, Stuart Webb and new councillors are Gerry Bean; Pasanna Mutha-Merennege; Angela Sdrinis and Meagan Keogh.

LIV CEO Michael Brett Young thanked outgoing president Michael Holcroft for his work at the LIV. Holcroft, who is based in Mildura, was focused on promoting the whole profession and involving rural, regional and remote lawyers in particular. Young added that Holcroft had also been a champion of the national profession reform.
