DLA Piper has added a new partner in Canberra, in addition to announcing 16 promotions to special counsel and senior associate nationwide.

Canberra-based government and litigation senior associate Catherine Power will join the partnership on July 1. Six of DLA Piper’s eight Canberra partners departed just after the merger on May 1 to form a new HWL Ebsworth office in the national capital.

Melbourne-based government and litigation partner Norman Abrams is also being seconded to the Canberra office to provide additional support to the team.

DLA Piper Australia chief executive Tony Holland said that while the firm had received a lot of interest post merger from legal practitioners, he is keen to promote internally as well.

In particular the firm is looking to re-build its Brisbane office, which lost nine partners to Thomsons Lawyers prior to the merger. “We see some really interesting opportunities coming from there,” said Holland.  “But we need to be strategic in which areas we invest.”
