India’s oldest law firm Khaitan & Co has hired Rajat Mukherjee as an associate partner in the firm’s New Delhi office.
Khaitan & Co partner Bharat Anand said the firm is seeking to capitalise on Mukherjee’s cross-border experience as a transaction lawyer between the US and India, an effort to boost the firm’s corporate practice in Delhi.
Mukherjee, who is qualified to practice in both India and New York, joined Skaddens after receiving his LLM from Columbia University’s School of Law. At Skadden, he represented domestic and international clients in private and public M&A and joint ventures. He also acted for investment banks on various financial transactions including IPOs and offerings exempt from SEC registration.
Mukherjee returned to India last year to do a secondment with Khaitan’s Delhi office.
In his new role, he will be part of the corporate team, focussing on M&A, private equity and cross- border transactions.
“The opportunities in the Indian market are exciting and are one of the main reasons I decided to come back to India. My experience at Skadden has taught me a lot, especially in terms of deal management, client servicing and knowledge of managing good systems and processes to enable a firm to grow. I will try and emulate some of these practices at Khaitan & Co,” Mukherjee said.ALB
