U.S. law firm Cooley has appointed capital markets lawyer Michael Yu as a partner in Hong Kong from Sidley Austin, where he was a counsel.
Last month, the Law Society of Hong Kong approved Cooley’s application to establish a registered foreign law firm in the city. The firm operates in association with Cai, Lee & Partners, which was set up by former Skadden Arps partner Will Cai.
The Cooley office in Hong Kong currently has three lawyers, including partners Cai and Yu. The firm also has offices in Beijing and Shanghai.
Yu’s practice focuses on Hong Kong’s initial public offerings, as well as other capital markets transactions, pre-IPO investments, public takeovers and securities regulation compliance. Prior to working with Sidley Austin, Yu had stints at Clifford Chance, Davis Polk & Wardwell and Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.
“Michael has a stellar reputation and brings to Cooley a deep technical knowledge of Hong Kong IPOs and other capital markets transactions,” said Dave Peinsipp, co-head of Cooley’s global capital markets practice.
