Young lawyers in the Indonesian legal community are making their mark in the market. In its third annual list of the ALB Indonesia Rising Stars, Asian Legal Business has listed 24 lawyers who are achieving results for their clients and setting high standards in the Indonesian legal space. The list is in alphabetical order and certain lawyers have been profiled.

DINASTI BRIAN HARAHAP
37, associate director/head of legal, M&A, NWP Retail
Harahap joined NWP Retail, a joint venture between Warburg Pincus (a global private equity firm) and PT City Retail Development Tbk (NIRO – a publicly listed Indonesian company), as a senior legal counsel. Within a year he was promoted to head of legal, M&A, mirroring the company’s DNA and its goal to rapidly develop, acquire, own and manage institutional quality commercial assets while contributing to the growth of the local community’s each asset serves.
Harahap leads an internal team of M&A legal professionals and has been instrumental in the company’s accelerated expansion from four seed assets in 2015 to nearly 50 assets today, including complex equity and debt transactions. Following a successful $200 million equity fundraising from international institutional investors in early 2019 (one of the largest fundraises ever for a private real estate company in Indonesia), Harahap successfully led various external counsels in multiple jurisdictions and the in-house team in securing NWP Retail’s first structured financing from a syndicate of international banks.
Most recently, Harahap successfully led the acquisition of five simultaneous shopping malls from Lippo Group, which adding to the complexity, was supported by relevant financings which was all done in-house between the in-house and lenders team.
ERLINE HERRMANN
39, partner, Adnan Kelana Haryanto & Hermanto
With 15 years of experience in legal practice, Herrmann is well versed in corporate M&A, banking and finance, and commercial laws. She joined Adnan Kelana Haryanto & Hermanto (AKHH) as counsel in 2018 after almost a decade of practice in international firms outside Indonesia, including a seven-year period in Singapore and over a year in London. She was made partner in January 2021.
Herrmann regularly represents clients across a broad range of corporate and financing transactions, including foreign investment into Indonesia, and has been involved in several notable Indonesian M&A and financing transactions over the past decade. Prior to joining AKHH, she was a key member of the team advising on Bumi plc’s acquisition of and subsequent separation from PT Bumi Resources Tbk following an infamous boardroom fallout; the sale of PT Multi Daerah Bersaing’s interest in PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara to PT Amman Mineral Indonesia; and PT Bumi Resources Tbk’s successful $4.5 billion cross-border debt restructuring. Recently, she has acted for clients on a number of public and private M&A transactions and infrastructure projects, including the development of the Jawa Satu Power project, Indonesia’s first gas-to-power project and the first project finance-based gas-to-power project in Asia.
NATHANIEL O. L. MANGUNSONG
39, managing partner, Adrem Law Firm
Mangunsong, who is an expert in corporate and commercial matters including fundraising, VC and PE investments, mergers and acquisitions, start-up growth, restructuring, foreign investment, joint ventures, and corporate governance, has over 16 years of legal experience. He is also well versed in financial services and general regulatory, employment, anti-monopoly and competition, and data privacy and technology.
Prior to joining Adrem Law Firm, Mangunsong was a general counsel at Ruangguru. Before which, he was a group general counsel at Gojek, a senior associate at Ginting & Reksodiputro, legal manager at Carrefour, and an associate at Hadiputranto, Hadinoto & Partners.
Gojek had earlier launched a popular mobile application, which offered different services from transport and logistics to lifestyle and Mangunsong was integral to the planning and launch of the application, facilitating the signing of documents and managing the legal processes relating to financing.
Meanwhile, Mangunsong, who joined Adrem Law Firm in 2020, has been a part of numerous deals. As a general counsel of Ruangguru, an online education platform in Indonesia, Mangunsong advised the founders in a $150 million Series C funding led by General Atlantic, a leading global growth equity firm, and GGV Capital, a preeminent global venture capital firm. EV Growth, UOB Venture Management and several new investors also participated in the round. This was one of the largest fundraisings for an education technology company in Southeast Asia. The investment also helped solidify Ruangguru’s position as a market leader in education technology and will aid in expanding its product offering across Indonesia and Vietnam.
MARTIN PATRICK NAGEL
37, managing partner, FKNK Law Firm
Nagel, who has been in the legal space for over 12 years, has been with FKNK Law Firm for more than a decade. He is well versed in commercial transactions and dispute, bankruptcy and debt restructuring, and alternative dispute resolution.
He has been a part of numerous noteworthy deals. Some of these included his appointment as an administrator in the postponement of debt payment obligation of Koperasi Simpan Pinjam Indosurya Cipta, which is a saving and loan financial institution. He had successfully administered, supervised, and managed the debt restructuring process with the result that the majority of unsecured creditors had approved the composition plan for debt restructuring amounting to 13.8 trillion rupiah.
Nagel also represented PT Patra Jasa as plaintiff in a lawsuit against PT Patra Indonesia and PT Indobuildco in Central Jakarta District Court. The case was a lease of land and buildings (assets) belonging to PT Patra Jasa used by PT Patra Indonesia.
Additionally, he assisted a local private company and Indonesian Army Directorate of Transportation in providing legal analysis for procurement of integrated broadband communication system development, with the total transaction amounting to 749 billion rupiah.

A specialist in arbitration and dispute resolution, commercial litigation, construction litigation, employment litigation, hospitality litigation, insurance litigation, insurance recovery, merger and acquisition litigation, general corporate, and white-collar criminal defence, Riza has been in the legal industry for more than 10 years.
He has handled projects and cases and has a high success rate. Riza success-fully defended his client PT Danamon International against PT Bank Danamon Indonesia from the district court till the Supreme Court concerning the default on the capital loan agreement with claims totalling over 500 billion rupiah.
He also assisted PT Adhiguna Keruktama, Indonesia’s largest dredging company, in the project of Tangguh LNG of BP Berau, worth about 100 billion rupiah as well as successfully defended the interest of PT Mufidah Medika Sawangan (member of Permata Mufidah Hospital Group) as the employer/owner from a district court to the Supreme Court concerning the construction disputes with claims totalling over than 30 billion rupiah.
In addition, he successfully advised PT Samudera Atlantis International in contract negotiation for design and build dredging of Turning Basin and Channel, Port of Benoa, Bali.
