Japanese law firm TMI Associates has established a strategic alliance with Australia’s Johnson Winter Slattery (JWS) marking the first partnership of its kind between major law firms from these two nations.

As part of the partnership, TMI Associates has announced plans to open an office in Australia by 2026. "This office will serve as a key operational hub to further strengthen our collaboration with JWS. Additionally, we will maintain close coordination through office proximity and regular exchanges of legal professionals between both firms," TMI partner Masayuki Nagai, who will be seconded to Sydney as part of the arrangement, told ALB.

Nagai emphasized that expanding into the Australian market represents a key component of TMI's global strategy.

"This strategic alliance combines TMI's expertise in Japanese law and our extensive client network with JWS's deep experience in Australian legal matters. Together, we are well-positioned to deliver efficient, high-quality legal services to clients operating between Japan and Australia, addressing the evolving demands of both legal markets,” added Nagai.

In a statement, JWS, which specialises in corporate and funds advisory services, said this collaboration strengthens its connection with Japan and enhances its capacity to serve Japanese corporate clients and funds operating in Australia, while also supporting Australian companies pursuing opportunities in the Japanese market.

“We are pleased to develop close ties with TMI Associates. The relationship enables us to offer our clients outstanding service and a gateway between Australia and Japan,” Jeremy Davis, JWS managing partner, added in a statement,

This alliance reflects the strengthening Japan-Australia economic relationship, with Japan ranking among Australia's top trading partners and investors. Japanese investment has diversified beyond traditional resources into renewable energy, infrastructure, and technology, particularly in green energy projects.

Meanwhile, Australian funds have increased investments in Japanese real estate, tech startups, and manufacturing. Trade agreements like JAEPA and CPTPP have significantly facilitated these growing cross-border activities.

The TMI-JWS partnership also aligns with TMI's broader global expansion strategy. Beyond its seven offices in Japan, TMI also has a presence in Silicon Valley, London, Brussels, and Nairobi.
