    Each year, ALB invites an independent judging panel of senior and expert legal industry leaders from various sectors corresponding to the diverse list of award categories. ALB is pleased to introduce some of the distinguished judges. The rest of the panel will be revealed on the evening of the awards.

     

    Albert Liu
    Vice President & Deputy General Counsel, Alibaba Group

    Albert joined Alibaba in 2017 and is passionate about executing Alibaba’s globalization strategy and its core mission to make it easy to do business anywhere. Previously, Albert served as the general counsel and chief compliance officer of three U.S. publicly listed technology companies, as well as head of corporate development, marketing, human resources and business unit general manager in past roles. Albert holds dual degrees in Computer Science and Political Science from Stanford University and a J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. He is a member of the State Bar of California.

     

    A. Bobby Ladwa
    Director, Banking Legal
    Barclays

    Bobby is a senior Director in the Banking Legal team at Barclays covering DCM, ECM and M&A for all of Apac, including HK, China, India, Australia, Singapore and South-East Asia.

    Bobby qualified as a Solicitor in England & Wales (1999) and HongKong (2004), and joined Barclays in Hong Kong over 10 years ago - previously Bobby was a Solicitor at Clifford Chance for 12 years (1997-2009) specialising in Debt & Equity Capital Markets.

    Bobby has worked in HongKong for 15 years, and has also worked in London, Tokyo, Singapore and Dubai - he has been on client secondments to BofA Merrill Lynch in HK, UBS in Singapore and Nakheel Properties in Dubai.

    Bobby is originally from London, and educated at Cambridge University with First Class Honours in Law.

     

     

    Stephen Man
    Vice President and Deputy General Counsel, eBay

    Stephen originally hails from Canada and has been in the legal trade in Hong Kong for more than 25 years.  He is currently the APAC head of legal at eBay where he manages a team of 25 lawyers who handle the entire range of legal and regulatory matters across the region. Prior to eBay, Stephen was the head of legal for Uber in Asia from 2014 until the end of 2017.  He was the first legal hire for Uber in Asia and built up the team from one to 31 within 15 months during a very exciting period of Uber’s international growth. Before Uber Stephen worked at Yahoo from 2006 – 2014 and left as VP and Deputy General Counsel, also covering APAC.  In his private practice career Stephen spent 8 years with Preston Gates & Ellis (now K&L Gates) where his practice covered a wide range of matters including corporate, M&A, commercial, IP and technology.

    Outside of work, Stephen can be found doing his best to keep up with his Generation Z daughters and trying to slow down the deterioration of his aging body.

     

    Sandra Wu 
    President, Association of Corporate Counsel Asia & Founding Partner and Group General Counsel, Origin X Capital

    Sandra has served on the ACC Hong Kong Board of Directors since 2017 as Treasurer and was elected President in 2019. Sandra is the Founding Partner and the Group General Counsel for Origin X Capital, a venture capital and investment management firm that provides seed, venture and growth stage funding toemerging companies in FinTech & Distributed Ledger Technology. She was the former Head of Legal & Compliance and Chief Compliance Officer for Mercer Investments (HK) Limited, where she looked after the legal, regulatory and compliance needs of the investment management and advisory business units. 

    During her private practice career, Sandra worked at Weil Gotshal & Manges specialising in Private Equity and Fund Formation, Kirkland & Ellis focusing on Corporate Law, Mergers & Acquisitions and Skadden Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom in Hong Kong. Outside of ACC, Sandra is a member of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the Dutch Chamber of Commerce and a Mentor at The Women's Foundation in Hong Kong. She is a frequent public speaker and thought leader on the topics of blockchain and its disruptive impact on legal & financial markets and the regulation of cryptocurrencies.

    Sandra holds a BCom (double major in Finance and Accounting), LL.B (First Class Honours) from the University of Sydney. She is featured on the Dean's List of Excellence for Academic Performance and is also an International Golden Key Honorary Society Scholar. Sandra is admitted as a Solicitor of the High Court of Hong Kong and Barrister & Solicitor of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Australia.

     

    Lin Shi
    Managing Director, Head of IPO Vetting
    Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited

    Lin Shi is Managing Director and Head of IPO Vetting within the Listing Department of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited.  Ms. Shi joined the Listing Department in August 2013.  She also co-chairs the Diversity Network at HKEX.

    Ms. Shi was a Senior Vice President covering Investment Banking Legal and General Counsel of Greater China with Bank of America Merrill Lynch from 2007 – 2012.  Before that, she worked at Allen & Overy in Hong Kong and New York and Fulbright & Jaworski.

    Since 2008, Ms. Shi has served as a Director of the Hong Kong Corporate Counsel Association (ACC Hong Kong) and was President from 2015 - 2019.  ACC Hong Kong is the only organization in Hong Kong representing in-house counsel run by in-house counsel. 

    Ms. Shi holds a bachelor’s degree in International Relations from Pomona College, cum laude, and a J.D. from New York University.

     

    Wally Suphap
    Vice President, Legal and Compliance Division, Morgan Stanley
    Co-Chair & Co-Founder, Hong Kong LGBT+ Attorneys Network

    Wally Suphap is Vice President in the Legal and Compliance Division of Morgan Stanley. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, Wally worked in private practice as a corporate securities lawyer at international law firms, including Clifford Chance (New York), Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom (Hong Kong), and Latham & Watkins (Hong Kong). He is dual qualified as a Hong Kong solicitor and New York attorney-at-law.

    In 2013, Wally co-founded the Hong Kong Gay and Lesbian Attorneys (HKGALA) Network, the first-ever professional network in Hong Kong dedicated to the promotion of LGBT+ diversity and inclusion in the legal profession, LGBT+ pro bono and community work, and the advancement of LGBT+ rights. HKGALA has grown to a network of 55 Supporting Firms, ranging from law firms to financial institutions to corporates.

    Wally was recognized as one of the Top 50 LGBT+ Future Leaders (ranked #1 in Asia and #4 globally) in the 2018 OUTstanding LGBT+ Role Model Lists published in the Financial Times and was awarded the LGBT+ Inclusion Champion Award in 2017 by Community Business.

    Wally holds a Bachelor of Arts (magna cum laude) from Columbia College and a Juris Doctor (Parker School Certificate for Achievement in Foreign and Comparative Law) from Columbia Law School.

      

    Geoffrey Mah
    Head of Legal, DBS Bank (Hong Kong) 

    Geoffrey is currently the Head of Legal at DBS Bank (Hong Kong), the Hong Kong subsidiary of DBS Bank Ltd.  DBS is present in 18 markets globally, and was named the ‘World’s Best Bank’ by Euromoney, Global Bank of the Year by The Banker and Best Bank in the World by Global Finance.

    Geoffrey is an experienced banking lawyer with 20+ years of legal experience within the legal and banking industry in Asia.  He started his legal career as a litigator in Singapore, before moving to Hong Kong in 1997 and focusing on banking law and practice. At DBS, Geoffrey is responsible for managing DBS Hong Kong’s legal affairs.  He leads the legal team to provide legal advice and transaction support for its consumer banking, institutional banking, private banking, corporate finance, global transaction services, and treasury and markets business units.

    The DBS Bank (Hong Kong) legal team was awarded Financial Services In-House Team of the Year by Asia Legal Business Awards in 2018.

    Geoffrey is qualified to practice in Hong Kong, Singapore and England & Wales.

     

    Simon NM Young
    Professor and Associate Dean (Research)
    Faculty of Law, The University of Hong Kong
     

    Professor Simon NM Young read law at the University of Toronto (LLB) and the University of Cambridge (LLM).  He qualified as a barrister and solicitor in Ontario, Canada and practiced for the Crown Law Office-Criminal, Ministry of the Attorney General.  In 2001, he joined the Faculty of Law, The University of Hong Kong, where he teaches criminal law and evidence and is currently the Associate Dean (Research). In 2008, he was called to the Hong Kong Bar and became a member of Parkside Chambers.  He specialises in criminal law, constitutional law and human rights cases.  He is the General Editor of Archbold Hong Kong and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Asia-Pacific Journal on Human Rights and the Law.

      

    Julien Chaisse
    Professor, School of Law
    City University of Hong Kong

    Julien Chaisse is Professor at the City University of Hong Kong, School of Law. He is an award-winning scholar of international law with a focus on the regulation and development of economic globalization. He has published numerous well-regarded and widely cited books and articles, and his scholarship has been cited by international courts/tribunals, as well as U.S. Courts. 

    As a leading scholar in the field of international economic law, Dr. Chaisse sits on the editorial board of several high-impact international journals. He is also an experienced arbitrator and a sought-after consultant/expert to international organizations, governments, multinational law firms, and private investors.

    Dr. Chaisse is an active member of the World Economic Forum (“Global Future Council on International Trade and Investment” and “Tax and Globalization Working Group”). Dr. Chaisse is also an advisor & partner to the United Nations ARTNET on FDI, member of the Academic Forum on ISDS, and Advisory board member of the Asian Academy of International Law (AAIL).

     

    Steven Gallagher
    Associate Professor of Practice in Law, Associate Dean (Teaching & Learning)
    The Faculty of Law, The Chinese University of Hong Kong

    Steven was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2006. Steven has taught Equity and Trusts, Land Law, Company Law, International Corporate Liquidation and International Corporate Governance in England and Hong Kong. In 2013, Steven introduced the Principles of Art, Antiquities, Cultural Heritage and the Law course to the LLM programme at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Steven has presented continuing professional development courses for solicitors in Hong Kong on many topics associated with equity, trusts, art and cultural heritage and the law. Steven’s research interests include equity and the law of trusts, cultural heritage law and legal history. 

     

    Cindy Tong
    General Counsel & Head of Compliance, AXA Asia

    Cindy is the Regional General Counsel and Head of Compliance for AXA Asia.  She oversees the legal and compliance function for AXA in seven jurisdictions including Hong Kong, China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines.  Her Regional team is responsible for all mergers, acquisitions and partnerships work for Asia.  Cindy also sits on a number of boards for AXA in Asia.

    Before joining AXA in 2009, Cindy worked in the law firms of Baker & McKenzie and Linklaters in Hong Kong, where she focused her practice on China corporate work and cross-border M&A transactions. Cindy also spent 10 years in Canada, where she obtained her law degree from Osgoode Hall Law School, York University in Toronto, before moving back to Hong Kong.

    ELIGIBLITY

    How do I know if I am eligible to make a submission? 

    We highly encourage all firms, individuals and in-house teams to submit, as we have numerous award categories to choose from. We welcome both past participants and newcomers to join the submission for the awards. 

    Is self-nomination permitted?

    Yes, we accept self-nominated submissions. We also accept third-party submissions, should you wish to nominate an external party or vice versa.

    Is there a fee required to make a submission in the law awards?

    No, there is no fee payment required for you or your firm/team to make a submission. 

    TIMELINE OF EVENTS

    When will the finalists and winners be announced?

    The shortlist of finalists will be released around 4-8 weeks prior to the awards ceremony. The winners will be exclusively announced at the awards ceremony in September in Honng Kong.

    When do the submissions open? When is the deadline to submit?

    NOMINATION PROCESS AND ANNOUNCEMENT

    How are the finalists chosen?

    Asian Legal Business will compile all of the submission entries, and the ALB editorial and research teams will extensively review each submission to ensure the criteria are met in order to advance to the shortlist of finalists. We stress that this process is fair, impartial and not subject to external influences. 

    How are the winners chosen? 

    Once the shortlist of finalists have been announced, an independent judging panel will review and select their top three choices for the award categories they are assigned to. The scores for each award category will be tabulated, and the individual/firm/team with the highest score will be announced as the winner. 

    What are the award categories that I can take part in?

    Any law firms, in-house teams or individuals may take part in multiple award categories if appropriate. The researchers reserve the right to move entries from one category to another if they feel it appropriate. The researchers’ decisions are final and no correspondence will be entered into. 

    Who will be on the judging panel for The Macallan ALB Hong Kong Law Awards 2019? 

    There will be an independent judging panel of at least 25 senior and expert legal industry leaders to review the submission materials. The judging panel will be selected on the basis of their expertise and knowledge, and will be comprised from various sectors to correspond to the diverse list of award categories. A partial list of judges’ names will be released prior to the awarding ceremony, and the remaining judges will be revealed on the evening of the awards. 

    What will my contact information/my client’s information be used for?

    All contact information provided will not be disclosed to external parties; and will only be seen by our ALB research team and the judges panel. We keep the information on record internally, in case we need to contact you or your client regarding any questions or discrepancies in the submission form. 

    Where will my name/firm name/team name be published if we are a finalist or winner?

    As a finalist and/or winner, your firm/team/individual name will be published in ALB awards materials and print magazine. For more information, please contact us.

    Is my submission confidential?

    Any information you submit will only be reviewed by the ALB team and independent judging panel, whose names will be published. The material submitted will only be disclosed to the above; if there is any information that is strictly confidential, please mark clearly on the nomination form. Though we do our best to maintain the security of the information you provide, any information you transmit to us is done at your own risk and Thomson Reuters is not responsible for any unauthorized transmission of information.
