Baker & McKenzie has expanded its IP capabilities in Japan with the hire of Kensaku Takase as a partner in its Tokyo office from Hogan Lovells.
Takase specialises in intellectual property and information technology law, with a particular expertise in contentious trademark, design and copyright matters. In addition, he has advised clients on trademark filing and portfolio management, anti-counterfeiting, and unfair competition issues.
In the IT sphere, Takase represents clients in issues involving software licensing, data protection, public procurement, cloud computing, escrow, and IT-related disputes.
“As the number of Japanese companies expanding overseas continues to grow rapidly, establishing and efficiently managing a global intellectual property portfolio is becoming a critical part of running a business,” said the firm’s Tokyo office managing partner, Yoshiaki Muto, in a statement. “Concurrently, it becomes important for corporations to deal with intellectual property right violations which have become particularly subtle. In recent years, our clients prioritise risks surrounding cyber security, information privacy, and data breaches among their top concerns.”
