DFDL has expanded its Thailand and energy offerings by welcoming partner Angus Mitchell, who will also take over as managing director of the firm’s offices in Bangkok, Samui and Phuket.

Mitchell, who will also serve as the head of the oil and gas practice of the firm’s regional energy, mining and infrastructure practice group, will additionally be closely involved in DFDL’s Myanmar practice, having worked for three years in the country from 1994.

Aside from being a general corporate and commercial lawyer, Mitchell has particular expertise in the areas of oil and gas, and power-related legal work, both in regards to project development and related share and asset transactions. He will be assisting Thai clients doing business in Myanmar.

“I am very pleased that DFDL was able to entice someone of Angus’ caliber and experience back to Asia,” said David Doran, DFDL partner and chairman, in a statement. “His arrival could not have been better timed, as he will play an essential role in meeting the increasing demands of our clients investing in Myanmar, and energy projects through the region.”

Having started his career as an associate in Myanmar with Russin & Vecchi, the first foreign law firm with a permanent presence in post-independence Myanmar, Mitchell joined Linklaters in Singapore 1997, before returning to Canada to work with Calgary-based law firm Bennett Jones. He was made partner in that firm in 2005.
