Ian Davis, a senior corporate partner and former chairman of Minter Ellison, has been elected as president of the World Law Group (WLG) at the group’s annual members’ conference held in Zurich earlier this month. Davis said these are challenging times for the legal profession worldwide.

“Now, more than ever, networks are important – they help member firms leverage contacts and client referrals and utilise the wealth of experience and skills of all members,” he said. “The WLG network is underpinned by a ‘best-friends’ philosophy that emphasises collegiality, shared values and trust.”

Previously chair of the WLG's Membership Committee and a regional director with responsibility for the Asia-Pacific region, Davis brings more than 40 years of professional corporate and commercial law experience to the role. He is one of Minters’ key advisers to China and also advises Australian corporations and investors who are formulating business strategies for Asia.

Davis will serve as president for a two-year term, succeeding the outgoing president Martika Jonk, who is a partner with CMS Derks Star Busmann in Amsterdam. “Ian's extensive international experience and long involvement with the World Law Group as an active firm representative and committee member makes him ideally suited to lead the organisation over the next two years” she said.

Minter Ellison is the Australian member of WLG, which is comprised of 49 law firms from around the world. Membership is by invitation only, with the organisation pursuing a strategy of selective growth in major international and regional business centres.
