WongPartnership has appointed Simon Tay as a senior consultant to its environmental and green economy and regional corporate/M&A practices.
Tay, who is well known for his work on environmental law and international public law, advises multinational corporations and governments on regional business investments as well as sustainability and environmental issues.
He comes to the firm after a wealth of private sector experience and academic experience. Tay is the current chairman of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs (SIIA) and holds a teaching position in international law and public policy at the National University of Singapore’s Lee Kwan Yew School of Public Policy. From 2002 to 2008 he chaired the National Environmental Agency, the main regulator for environmental protection in Singapore.
WongPartnership was the first local law firm in Singapore to launch a “green” practice group. Through this group formed last year, the firm has already advised EPURON on its investments in renewable energy projects in Asia, and Keppel Corporation in its JV to develop an eco-city in Tianjin.
Although WongPartnership is still the only local firm in Singapore to have a dedicated ‘green’ practice, sources close to ALB suggest that at least two more of Singapore’s Big Four are on the brink of launching similar initiatives in the coming months to capture some of the advisory work on offer in this rapidly growing area of practice.ALB
