Senior associate Nicola Davis of Norton Rose’s Singapore banking team has been promoted to of counsel specialising in energy and infrastructure projects, primarily international project finance.

Davies transferred to Singapore in January 2007 from London. Since then, her infrastructure work has included advising governments, banks and sponsors on public private partnerships (PPP) and her energy experience includes advising clients on IPP and IWPP projects.

"PPPs have been very successful in Singapore and a number of Asian countries are trying to replicate its success. It is certainly an up and coming trend in the region," Davies told ALB in noting the market trends in project models across the region. "Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia – with their government agencies –  are dedicated to looking at ways to procuring infrastructure through similar models; Indonesia by way of example, is ramping up on the PPP front just this week."

Davies worked with Singapore partners  Nick Merritt and Jeff Smith on the Singapore SportsHub project  – the largest sports facilities infrastructure PPP project in the world.

“In Singapore, PPP models have been in place for approximately five to six years. It certainly helps to have a centralised unit for procurement. It makes things easier,” she said.

Davies arrived in Asia three years ago and said she had no plans to leave.

“It’s exciting to be where the growth in infrastructure – whether it be PPP, or other finance models – is phenomenal. Infrastructure is an area of growth that we at Norton Rose see as predominant in this part of the world,” she said
