Russell Keddie, the founder of Keddies Lawyers, has hit back at media reports that he has “rolled over” and admitted to the overcharging of a Keddies client. “As this matter is before the Administrative Decisions Tribunal we do not wish to comment with respect to the statement of claim filed by Shuang Ying Meng. We will say, however, that these claims are misconceived and are being vehemently defended,” said Keddie.

Keddie went on to claim that The Sydney Morning Herald and its journalist had failed to report that all complaints, except the Meng matter before the Administrative Decisions Tribunal, have been dismissed by the tribunal. “I am proud of the work that the firm has delivered under my leadership for over 25 years...this will continue under the Slater & Gordon banner,” he added.

ASX listed firm Slater & Gordon proposed to buy Keddies Lawyers in late October for A$35m. Slater & Gordon managing director Andrew Grech said the latest controversy surrounding the firm would not change the firm’s interest in Keddies, but that due diligence on the acquisition was not yet completed. “We have an open mind about all of this,” said Grech. “The Administrative Decisions Tribunal needs to decide what is the verdict is on the current claim [regarding Meng]. We have reviewed the previous matters that went before the tribunal....the vast majority of those complaints against the firm have been dismissed.”

Meanwhile, Slater & Gordon Lawyers has announced a further expansion of its western Melbourne presence,  with the opening of an office in Werribee. The firm already has staff located in Keilor, Footscray and Sunshine.
