Hong Kong corporate lawyer Charles Ching was among the latest to be promoted to ‘of counsel’ at Freshfields. His was also one of three recent ‘of counsel’ promotions in the corporate practice of Magic Circle firms.

Allen & Overy has also promoted a corporate lawyer, Susan Ng, in its Hong Kong office along with two international capital markets lawyers Desiree Sumilang and Agnes Tsang in the round of promotions announced last week on May 11. Linklaters also promoted Hong Kong corporate lawyer Peggy Wang and in Singapore Sophie Mathur, another corporate lawyer, was made of counsel at the same time last month.  The promotions, all of which were effective from May 1, were alongside other appointments for the Asia-Pacific region.

Freshfields has promoted six to the position globally, after Magic Circle rival Allen & Overy announced 22 new of counsel firm wide last week – with a total of three for the Hong Kong office. Linklaters also promoted significantly more to of counsel last month, after it announced 16 would take the title firm wide on 11 April, including two in Hong Kong.

The promotion of a number of corporate and capital markets lawyers in the region is indicative of the contribution these practices, and lawyers, make to the firm as a whole and the firm’s attempt to develop international talent, according to Ted Burke, Freshfields managing partner. “Counsel appointments recognise the talents of highly experienced senior lawyers and our commitment to developing talent across our international network,” he said.

Freshfields also appointed 11 to of counsel in October 2010.ALB
