Clifford Chance will be advising the organisers of 2022 FIFA World Cup, to be held in Qatar, including the development of the tournament’s showpiece 85,000-seater Lusail Iconic Stadium.

The stadium will be used for the opening and final games of the World Cup. Designed by British firm Foster + Partners, it will have an almost circular base, surrounded by a moat and connected to the car park by six bridges. Like the other stadiums planned for the tournament, the Lusail Stadium will be cooled using solar power and have a zero carbon footprint.

"We are delighted to have been appointed by the Supreme Committee on this landmark infrastructure programme for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, and we are excited to be working on a project of this magnitude,” said Richard Parris, Clifford Chance’s Doha managing martner, in a statement. “It is also a privilege to be working on a high-profile project such as the Iconic Stadium which will set the benchmark for stadium development.”

Clifford Chance previously advised on the London Olympics and Poland's Euro 2012 programme, as well as aspects of major stadia like Wembley National Stadium and Stamford Bridge in London, and Spartak Stadium in Moscow.
