Singapore’s largest firm Rajah & Tann has entered into a tie-up with Indonesia’s Assegaf Hamzah & Partners (AHP) as it seeks to become a Southeast Asian powerhouse.

The Business Times reported that AHP, which is Indonesia’s largest law firm with 60 fee-earners, will give Rajah & Tann access to the largest economy in Southeast Asia. AHP specialises in capital markets, banking and finance.

“Indonesia is a very, very important market, based on queries from our clients. We have worked with Assegaf Hamzah for some years, and they have a common vision with us,” Lee Eng Beng SC, Rajah & Tann's managing partner, was quoted by the newspaper as saying. “The largest Indonesian law firms often tie up with big UK firms, and U.S. law firms like Baker & McKenzie. Assegaf Hamzah is the first major Indonesian firm to tie up with an Asian law firm. That's because they see Southeast Asia as their home and want to remain local. They also want to compete with the big international firms that are expanding in the region," he said.

Rajah & Tann currently has eight offices in Asia including Cambodia, Myanmar, China, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Malaysia (associate office).
