Indian law firm J. Sagar Associates is opening its Chennai office, its sixth nationwide, after merging with Vichar Partners.

Chennai-based Vichar was set up in 2010 by former Dua Associates partner Chitra Narayan, Paras Kuhad Associates’ ex-city head Vinod Kumar, and former Universal Legal partner Aarthi Sivanandh.

The new JSA Chennai office will have 12 fee-earners, including equity partners Kumar and Sivanandh and retained partner Chitra Narayan.

“We have had a growing demand from both domestic and international clients to have a practice at Chennai. This merger will enable JSA to hit the road running, as Vichar Partners already has a significant presence in Chennai,” said Berjis Desai, JSA’s senior partner, in a statement.

“We are excited to become part of a national law firm that is ahead of the fundamental changes that occur in a market. JSA’s commitment to a culture, based on merit and excellence, is the only reality that matters,” Sivanandh said.

JSA was founded by Jyoti Sagar in 1991, and also has offices in Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Hyderabad and Bangalore.
