Former UK Supreme Court judge Lord Hope has joined Arbitration Chambers Hong Kong, which hosts arbitrators and arbitration counsel from across the globe.

Lord Hope, who retired from the UK Supreme Court in June last year, practised at the Scottish Bar for 24 years with a focus on construction, oil and gas and tax law. He also occasionally sat as a sole arbitrator.

Lord Hope became a Queen’s Counsel in 1978, and in 1989, was appointed to the bench as Lord President of the Court of Session and Lord Justice General of Scotland. He was appointed to the House of Lords in 1996 as a Lord of Appeal in Ordinary, and then as the Second Senior Lord of Appeal in 2009. He then became Deputy President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom in October 2009. 

“For many years, the UK has been the main beneficiary of [Lord Hope’s] exceptional contribution to both academia and the law, and now as part of Chambers those of us based in Asia will also have the opportunity to benefit from his significant knowledge and experience,” said Gavin Denton, the founder of Arbitration Chambers Hong Kong, in a statement.
