The 2014 Malaysia In-House Legal Summit in Kuala Lumpur on August 26, will address the country's upcoming goods and services tax, last year's Companies Bill, 2010's Competition Act, and their effect on doing business in the country.

These regulatory changes have come amid calls to strengthen consumer protection and to facilitate setup of companies in Malaysia.

2014's summit follows the success of the inaugural Malaysia In-House Legal Summit in 2013.

Asian Legal Business (ALB) has partnered Raja Daryl & Loh (RDL), the International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF), and Thomson Reuters’ Governance Risk and Compliance for the summit, which will feature leaders of Malaysia’s legal profession from government bodies, private practice, academia, and corporations. The summit is also supported by the Malaysia Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA).

Raja Darryl & Loh will start by tackling must-knows for in-house legal counsel on the implementation of the goods and services tax. This will be followed by an in-depth discussion on the key changes and impact of the Companies Bill, and how companies can leverage on recent developments.

After RDL’s session, INCEIF will address how ethics and corporate responsibility can drive economic growth in the Islamic finance industry. The key factors to synchronise ethics and conventional finance will be defined, and the perceptions of customers and managers towards ethics and corporate responsibility in Islamic Finance will be explored.

Thomson Reuters Governance, Risk & Compliance will then speak about managing key challenges when conducting due diligence for M&A; address international enhanced due diligence (EDD), and also tips for executing due diligence when dealing with multi-jurisdictional M&A transactions.

The day will close with an interactive panel discussion on the key features of MyCC’s Guidelines, the Personal Data Protection Act of 2010, and innovative strategies to navigate the legal landscape without compromising the companies’ objectives.

Five of Malaysia's top corporate lawyers will participate in the this panel discussion.
