Hong Kong-based legal start-up Dragon Law has come under the scanner of the Malaysian Bar Council for an alleged violation of the Legal Profession Act (LPA) 1976, according to a report in local media.
Dragon Law entered Malaysia to offer legal drafting services to make the legal market more accessible to the public, according to the report. However, under the Act, unregistered foreign lawyers are prohibited from carrying out services that are customarily within the purview of an advocate and solicitor in Malaysia.
The report added that the Malaysian Bar Council, which regulates lawyers and legal services, is currently studying the matter to ensure that the LPA is upheld.
