South Korea’s Barun Law is representing around 40 BMW owners in lawsuits against the carmaker in that country over BMW’s vehicles bursting into flames, according to local media reports

The Joongang Daily reported that 41 BMWs have caught fire in Korea so far this year, and many models are being recalled to have their emission gas recirculation (EGR) systems replaced.

In a previous article, a BMW spokesperson had been quoted as attributing Korea’s traffic conditions and driving styles for the vehicles bursting into flames. The carmaker later clarified the comments, saying that the original statement, made in German, had been mistranslated.

Ha Jong-sun, a lawyer at Barun, criticised the comments and said that the German company was “trying to place responsibility for the fires on Korea and its BMW owners as part of an effort to conceal the vehicles’ defects.”
