Eversheds Sutherland appointed John Siu as a partner in its Financial Services Disputes and Investigations team in Hong Kong.

While he joins immediately from Herbert Smith Freehills, where he was senior consultant, Siu was previously an in-house counsel at Hong Kong’s Securities and Futures Commission (SFC), the city’s securities regulator.

At the SFC, Siu oversaw a wide range of matters, including search warrants, s.183 investigation notices, criminal prosecution at the Magistrate's Court, Market Misconduct Tribunal proceedings and civil proceedings before the High Court.

Eversheds is the third law firm to hire ex-SFC lawyers in the recent past. Clifford Chance hired Jimmy Chan, a director and head of the International and Policy team within the SFC’s Enforcement Division, while Wynne Mok, another head of enforcement, was hired by Slaughter and May.

Eversheds Sutherland has been busy hiring partners in Hong Kong this summer. The firm appointed Cedric Lam as the head of its intellectual property practice in Greater China from Dorsey & Whitney and Dickson Ng as a corporate partner from Taylor Wessing.
