Recently established boutique Hong Kong firm Hugill & Ip has hired private client specialist Freda Lim as its fifth partner. Lim joins from Vivien Teu & Co, where she was a consultant.
Lim has about 15 years of experience in private practice. Prior to joining Vivien Teu, she was a special counsel at UK firm Withers.
Her hire comes at a time when Hugill & Ip is looking to expand its private client practice to cater to what it says is an increase in family and succession work.
From the firm’s perspective, as Hong Kong’s wealthy business owners age, not many have a plan in place that can weather shifting dynamics.
“Most of the clients of high net worth individuals may not be aware of the change of dynamics among the family members when the patriarch or matriarch passes away. And that requires careful planning to avoid the dispute from occurring,” said Alfred Ip, who co-founded the Hugill & Ip along with fellow ex-Oldham, Li & Nie partner Adam Hugill, in September. Ip leads the firm’s private client practice.
