Our client, Viki, is a premier global entertainment streaming site where millions of people discover and consume primetime shows and movies subtitles in more than 200 languages. Viki is part of the Rakuten Group of companies, which includes Viber, eBates, Lyft, and more, reaching a global audience of nearly 1 billion users. 

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented lawyer with a passion for digital media and internet-based distribution models to join the Rakuten Viki legal team in Singapore.  Reporting to the Head of Legal and Business Affairs, responsibilities will include: advising business units and stakeholders on legal and risk management issues; supporting the roll-out of new product features and innovations; drafting, reviewing and negotiating legal documentation and contracts; working with internal/external counsel; assist in administration of corporate policies and procedures; and supporting the business on a breadth of compliance, privacy and legal matters related to Rakuten Viki’s worldwide business operations. This is an excellent opportunity for a person seeking to develop and gain global experience in a variety of legal areas in the burgeoning video streaming industry.

Our client is seeking a pro-active and decisive Legal Counsel who possesses excellent organisational, interpersonal and cross-cultural communication skills.  The ability to work cross-functionally and effectively under pressure, and the willingness to learn and to deal with ambiguity, in a dynamic and fast-paced environment is essential.

 Minimum requirements:

  • Law degree (LLB, JD or equivalent)
  • Minimum 4 – 6 years of relevant legal experience (preferably in-house at an international media, technology or internet company)
  • Licensed to practice law in Singapore and/or US
  • Excellent communication, drafting and negotiation skills in English
  • Strong experience in contractual and commercial law
  • Extraordinary judgment of the appropriate balance between risk, regulatory compliance and business needs
  • Adept at identifying and considering critical key issues, and assessing and articulating legal risks so the business can make informed commercial decisions
  • Flexibility to work across multiple time zones

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in media, content acquisition/production, OTT, intellectual property, technology licensing, dispute resolution, corporate governance, compliance and regulatory regimes, and/or privacy and data protection
  • Substantive knowledge and demonstrated expertise of US and/or international laws dealing with content regulation, intellectual property, advertising, data protection and privacy frameworks (including GDPR and CCPA), and consumer protection 
  • Self-motivated, a high degree of independence, and have a desire and ability to pitch in, be challenged and think outside the box
  • A commercially astute business-partner
  • Strong project and people management skills, with the ability to lead and obtain consensus from key stakeholders and third parties
  • Comfortable working with international teams, and across job functions and levels
