Asian Legal Business releases its second annual ranking of the emerging legal talents in Singapore. The list includes lawyers who have demonstrated exceptional potential and received praise from their clients. The list is arranged alphabetically, and some lawyers have been featured in profiles.

To qualify, lawyers must be under the age of 40 and permanently based in Singapore. The list selection process was based on the following criteria:

  • Important deals or cases handled;
  • Key clients represented; and
  • Significant accolades received in the form of public recognition, awards, and other similar achievements.

 

Shobna Chandran

Shobna Chandran’s eponymous company commenced operations in October 2023. She has an exceptional academic record and was a Justices Law Clerk to the Chief Justice and the Court of Appeal bench until 2008. During her 15-year career, Chandran has worked with at least three senior counsels.

On the arbitration front, Chandran has spent her entire career in international arbitration, having handled arbitration matters worth billions of dollars. She is a current fellow of the Singapore Institute of Arbitrators and has worked on cases involving telecommunications and pharmaceuticals to solar and renewable energy. Shareholder disputes and banking and finance-related disputes are also within her speciality. The jurisdictions under which her cases have fallen include Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, India, the United States and Africa.

Some of Chandran’s notable cases include representing a listed Indian company in a dispute arising from a joint venture agreement worth over $800 million. She also successfully represented a Thai conglomerate in a dispute against an Australian-listed company for breaches of representations and warranties under a sale and purchase agreement. Another notable transaction involved a major French pharmaceutical company in a dispute with its Indonesian partner under a distributorship agreement. Damages claimed were in excess of $100 million, which were successfully dismissed.

Chandran has received numerous accolades for her work, including as one of the top lawyers under 40 by Singapore Business Review in 2017 and commended as Litigation Star by Benchmark Asia Pacific in 2023.

He also acted for Munich-based private-owned real estate family office, AM Alpha, in the purchase of Robison 112, a 14-storey freehold office building in Singapore’s central business district, for nearly S$269.7 million.

Moreover, Shang represented the purchaser Solitaire Cecil, a joint venture managed by TE Capital Partners and LaSalle Investment Management, in the acquisition of the PIL Building along Cecil Street in Singapore.

One of Shang’s significant clients is developer EL Developments, which he represented in the acquisition of the Slim Barracks Rise Parcel A site from URA for S$320.1 million. The client will now redevelop the site into a mixed-use development with more than 260 residential units expected to be built.

After graduating from the National University of Singapore in 2008, Lee spent 14 years in legal practice.

During his career, he was involved in several significant transactions, including acting as Singapore counsel to China Development Bank and Bank of China in a $751 million syndicated loan facility for the refinancing of existing debt substitution and term loan facilities under the China Minmetals Corporation’s group of companies, a China-based metals and minerals group.

Imran Rahim is one of the youngest lawyers in Singapore entrusted with the responsibility of coordinating the corporate restructuring and insolvency practice group for a law firm of Eldan Law’s size and standing.

Rahim is a founding member and chairman of a society called PEGUAM, along with other lawyers, paralegals, in-house counsel and civil servants. The idea behind the society is to bring together Muslim legal professionals and provide opportunities for them to network. Bryan Tan

Bryan Tan has gained recognition as a future star for his exceptional commercial and transactional work. His clients have described him as “responsive” and “technically strong”. Nicholas Tan

One of her significant achievements was acting as lead transaction counsel in advising an independently managed subsidiary of a Singapore sovereign wealth fund in its $200 million equity investment. This strategic move was part of the restructuring involving a significant debt portfolio, navigating complex consensual workouts and arrangements.

Wang’s expertise extends to landmark cases, including the S$331.4 million acquisition of Innovalues, which was recognised as the Singapore Venture Capital & Private Equity Association PE Deal of the Year 2017. She also played a pivotal role in the $2.5 billion worldwide restructuring of Pacific Andes Resources Development, which is a testament to her financial acumen.

In her role, Wang has advised prestigious clients such as Tuan Sing Holdings, TIH, SK ecoplant, and China Fishery Group. Her strategic counsel has facilitated transformative mergers, acquisitions, and investments, establishing her as a visionary leader in corporate law.

Ronald Wong started his legal career at one of the Big Four firms, where he focused on commercial litigation and arbitration.

Wong has had several successful highlights in his career, including representing an investment fund manager and a global bank in a claim against a foreign guarantor under a cross-border syndicated loan agreement.

He also successfully defended a fraud claim in misrepresentation, breach of contract and conspiracy involving a share option on behalf of a regulated fund management company and managing partner.

Moreover, Wong represented claimants in an SIAC arbitration involving breach of warranties and non-compete covenants arising from an acquisition of majority shareholding in a company, and successfully obtained emergency interim injunctive relief.

He has won several awards, including Top Pro Bono Volunteer 2020, Criminal Legal Aid Scheme--Law Society Pro Bono Services, and the Asia Business Law Journal 2019, A-List Singapore’s Top 100 Lawyers. He was also privileged to be awarded the Singapore Academy of Law (SAL) Overseas Attachment Scholarship, during which he was a Secondee with South Square Chambers.
