Our client is a key player in the music industry representing the interests of its members from across the globe. The Asian Regional Office, based in Hong Kong, is looking for a Regional Legal Counsel.
The ideal candidate will be based in Hong Kong.
Responsibilities:
This role is part of the client's leadership team. The role acts as the key legal counsel and advisor for the Asia region as follows:
Policy and Regulatory
- Monitoring, interpreting and influencing the political and regulatory developments in Asia which may impact the client's members' businesses which includes drafting submissions on improvements in copyright law, collective management regulations and any laws impacting the recorded music industry
Enforcement
- Collaborating with the client's parent organisation to help drive IP enforcement initiatives in Asia which includes advising and assisting in enforcement actions in relation to rights controlled by the client's members and supporting evidence collection for the purposes of litigation, administrative actions and sending warning notices initiated by the client or its parent or affiliated organisations.
General Legal and Music Licensing
- Advising on legal, business and operational activities in respect of the exploitation of rights controlled by the client's members
- Providing relevant stakeholders in London and the Asia region with timely and accurate updates
- Advising and assisting in music licensing activities in the region related to public performance and broadcasting
Translation
- Review and translate Chinese laws, regulations, notices and proposed legislation into English
- Translate English policy submissions into Chinese
Company Secretarial Work
- Attending to all company secretarial matters for the companies or organisations owned or controlled by the client or its parent or affiliated organisations which includes annual fillings
- Organising, preparing, attending and minuting all regional board meetings
Key requirements:
- Law degree from a reputable university
- At least 8 years of experience practising intellectual property law with a focus on copyright
- Preference will be given to those with experience working at a regional or international level
- A good understanding of the international copyright framework relating to sound recordings is preferred
- Demonstrated experience in working across different cultures and nationalities
- Must be proactive, self-driven with an ability to work independently
- Chinese and English written and spoken fluency required
- Travel in the Asian region and some travel outside of the region required
