Leading intellectual property lawyer and  founder of India’s oldest and most established intellectual property firm Remfry & Sagar, Dr Vidya Sagar has passed away last week at age 85.

Sagar who took the helm of the firm in 1973, was previously a barrister at Lincoln’s Inn and a doctor from the Free University in Berlin. He was called to the Indian bar in 1952 and took over the practice of Remfrey & Son in 1973 – a firm that was originally founded in 1827. The firm was renamed to be Remfry & Sagar in 1991.

In addition to professional accolades, Sagar would also be remembered for his investments of time and money into the Sagar School – a school that was founded in 2000 as a co-educational, residential school to nurture the next generation of talented Indian students. 

Sagar, who in the legal circles, has been regarded as the father of Indian IP – having mentored scores of talented IP lawyers, was born in Lyallpur, which is now Pakistan.ALB
