Japanese firm Nishimura & Asahi has hired Lars Markert as a foreign law counsel in its Tokyo office from German firm Gleiss Lutz, where he was an associate partner in the Stuttgart office.

Markert, who will take on the status of foreign law partner after admission as a registered foreign lawyer (gaikokuho jimu bengoshi), has advised large corporations as well as states in international commercial and investment arbitration, complex litigation, and internal investigations. He is an expert in representing Japanese companies in their business dealings in Europe.

During his 11-year stint at Gleiss Lutz, Markert spent two years at Nishimura & Asahi as a secondee from 2012 to 2014. Before Gleiss Lutz, he worked at international firms Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York and Shearman & Sterling in Dusseldorf.

Nishimura & Asahi is the largest firm in Japan with 515 lawyers, 119 of whom are partners, according to ALB’s Top 50 largest law firms ranking in 2017.
