Veteran corporate lawyer Rachel Eng is exiting Singapore Big Four firm WongPartnership, where she spent more than two decades, to join accounting firm PwC’s legal arm. Eng is PwC’s most high-profile hire in Asia so far.

Eng, who currently holds the position of deputy chairman, was managing partner of WongP for nearly six years between 2010 and 2016. During that time, she won the Managing Partner of the Year award at the ALB SE Asia Law Awards twice (2011 and 2013). During her tenure, the firm opened offices in Shanghai and Yangon.

A corporate lawyer with a focus on listings, corporate advisory, REITs and funds, and corporate governance work, Eng has acted on listings like Sasseur REIT, the first outlet mall REIT to be listed in Asia; IHH Healthcare, the first dual concurrent listing on Bursa Malaysia and the Singapore Exchange; and Sri Trang Agro-Industry Public Company, the first listed company on the Stock Exchange of Thailand to have a dual primary listing on the Singapore Exchange.

In a statement announcing Eng’s departure, WongP chairman Alvin Yeo highlighted the “strong working relationship” the firm has with PwC Singapore. “We are sad to see Rachel leave us but we are happy to have her join an institution that has been a friend of WongPartnership for many years,” he added.

PwC has been expanding voraciously in Asia in the past year. Last year, the outfit added Indonesia’s Melli Darsa & Co. to its network, and more recently, Tiang & Co. PwC’s legal arm in Hong Kong, hired partners like Martin Robertson from Mayer Brown JSM and Martyn Huckerby from King & Wood Mallesons.
