Malaysia’s Azmi & Associates has hired Pierre Brochet as a registered foreign qualified lawyer after receiving the Bar Council’s first-ever licence to do so.

The issuance of the licence by the Bar Council of Malaysia is another step in the country’s plan to gradually liberalise its legal sector. So far, two international law firms have received a qualified foreign law firm (QFLF) licence from the Bar Council - Trowers & Hamlins (2015) and Herbert Smith Freehills (2017).

The England and Wales and France-qualified Brochet will be allowed to practice in the following areas: corporate finance, capital markets, banking & finance and derivatives.

With over 20 years of experience, Brochet has worked with firms such as Clifford Chance, White & Case, McDermott Will & Emery and Greenberg Traurig in London, Paris and New York.

Brochet’s appointment comes months after Azmi & Associates hired Sharifah Hamzah as a partner in Kuala Lumpur from the Qatar office of Canadian law firm Bennett Jones.
